Note: For the remaining lessons provide children with "the standard colors," which are red, yellow, blue (primary colors), orange, green, violet (secondary colors), brown, and black.

Instructors review the standard, primary, secondary, warm, and cool color categories with children:

  • The standard colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.
  • The primary colors are red, yellow and blue.
  • The secondary colors are orange, green and violet.
  • The warm colors are red and orange.
  • The cool colors are blue and violet.

Instructors relate the following color uses to children:

  • Yellow represents light and is mixed in to brighten other colors.
  • Green is neutral.
  • Brown and black are used to form shades of the standard colors.

Instructors tell children the following color pairings are complementary colors:

  • Red and green
  • Yellow and violet
  • Blue and orange

Instructors review the concept of a "wash" with children as follows:

  • A "wash" is a color spread evenly over a surface. Often associated with watercolors, "wash" also applies to colored crayons.
  • The wash is the most important mechanical element in crayon drawing.

Review how to produce an even, scratch-free wash using crayons:

  • Grasp the crayon with the thumb and three fingers as shown in the image.
  • Rub the side of the crayon against the paper to produce an even color across the page.
  • Try to make the wash a smooth as possible, free from scratches and irregularities

Children complete the following drill work - washes:

  1. Apply a wash of red to a piece of paper, covering all the white space.
  2. Apply a wash of blue to a piece of paper, covering all the white space.

Children study the image of the crayon box and complete the following drill work:

  1. Black. Paint the entire design with black.
  2. Yellow and Violet. Place a wash of yellow over the whole design, and then a wash of violet over the dark part. Paint the margins and letters violet.
  3. Red and Green. Place a wash of red over the whole design, and then a wash of green over the dark part. Paint the letters and margins green.
  4. Red and Green. Place a wash of green over the entire design, and then a wash of red over the dark part. Paint the letters red, also the margins.
  5. Brown and Violet. Place a wash of brown over the whole design, and then a wash of violet over the dark part. Paint the letters and margins with violet.

Children study the image of the rug and complete the following drill work:

  1. Black and Red. Place a wash of red over the whole, a wash of black over the border and band and then a wash of red over the band.
  2. Red. Paint the entire rug with red.
  3. Red and Black. Place a wash of black over the whole, a wash of red over the border and band and a heavier wash of red over the band.
  4. Black and Orange. Place a wash of orange over the whole, a wash of black over the band and border, and a heavier wash over the band.
  5. Green and Yellow. Place a wash of green over the whole, and a wash of yellow over the band and border, and then a wash of green over the border.
  6. Red and Green. Place a wash of red over the border and band, and a wash of green over the center and band.
